Traditionally, Maracas were made of gourds that have dried seeds inside. The seeds make sounds when the gourds are shaken by holding wood handles added to the gourd.
Maracas are played in pairs, sometimes with one high pitched gourd paired with a lower pitched gourd. Modern maracas can be made of plastic, rawhide, wood, or may even be filled with small steel ball fill or bone chips.
